Miss Casey and Mrs Siviter will be keeping this page updated with weekly activities for your children to access.

 

We have also included some useful videos and website links for you to explore during these school closures. Websites like Phonics Play and Twinkl are allowing free subscriptions for parents to support children during these times. Please ensure you are using Bug Club from home with your child, all children have several books to read and enjoy with you.

Challenges for w.b.18.5.20

Writing Challenge!

This week can you do a little bit of research? I want you to have a go at finding out about the life cycle of a butterfly and then do some writing about it. Have a go at making a picture of a life cycle and then doing some writing about what you have found out.

 

Easy - write some of the key words about the life cycle of a butterfly e.g. egg, caterpillar, cacoon, butterfly.

 

Medium - write some simple sentences about the life cycle of a butterfly e.g. There is an egg. There is a caterpillar.

 

Hard -  write some sentences about the life cycle of a butterfly e.g. First they are an egg and then they turn into a caterpillar.

Phonics Challenge!

Go outside or look around your home and see if you can find anything that have the following sounds and then have a go at writing down what you have found with your sounds in.

 

Easy - l, f, b, h, r, u.

 

Medium - qu, ch, sh, z, y, w.

 

Hard - ng, ai, igh, oa, th, ar.

Maths Challenge!

This week we are concentrating on recognising numbers and ordering numbers. Below is a link to a game where you can order numbers. Please only work with your child on ordering numbers going forwards. You can begin by ordering numbers to 5 and then move on to ordering numbers to 10 and 20. Make sure your child recognises the numbers before moving them first to ensure they are not just guessing!

Feelings activity!

We are spending lots of time with our family at home during this lockdown. Below is a link to an animated story all about how special your family are. Watch the video and talk about how important your family are to you and what you love about them. 

 

Writing Challenge!

VE Day! Tell us what you did to celebrate VE Day! Did you have a party, make some banners, or do some baking? Hva e ago at drawing a picture of what you did and do some writing to go along with it.

 

Easy - write a few words about what you did e.g. party, cake, flag.

 

Medium - write a simple sentence about what you did e.g We had a party.

 

Hard - write a sentence about what you did e.g. We made some cakes and had a party.

 

Phonics Challenge!

Game time! Get your flashcards from your learning pack and spread them over the floor. Get your parents to give you 20 seconds to pick up as many sounds as you can...

 

Easy - identify all the sounds and have a go at making some cvc words.

 

Medium - identify all the sounds and have a go at making cvc/cvcc words.

 

Hard - identify all the sounds and make a word, then have a go at putting that word into a sentence,

This week you have some number problems to have a go at answering! These number problems are all based around one more or one less than so use your number lines from out of your packs to help you. 

1. Monkey says that one more than 7 is 4. Is he right? How do you know? 

2. Lion says that one more than 4 is 6. Is he right? How many jumps did you make to get from the number 4 to 6 on your number line?

3. Crocodile says that one less than 9 is 7. Is he right? How do you know?

4. Giraffe is standing on the number 5. He makes one jump forward on his number line. What number does he land on?

5. Hippo is standing on the number 10. He makes one jump backward on his number line. What number does he land on? 

6. Tiger says one less than 3 is 1. Is he right? How do you know?

 

Can you have a go at making your own problem by choosing one of the animals from the picture below. Make sure its a problem based around one more/ one less.

Science challenge!

This week we are going to have a go at a floating and sinking experiment. 

First, find 10 objects from around your home some that you think may sink, some that you think may float. 

Then fill a bowl or your sink with water and see if you can make a prediction as to which objects you think may float and which objects you think may swim. You can write your predictions down or draw pictures of them to record your predictions. 

After that, test time! Place each objects one at a time in the water and see if they float or sink!

Finally, record your answers. You may find it helpful to make a table like below to record which objects float and which sink. Think about the properties of the objects. Do the large objects float? Do the small objects sink? Are they heavy or light? What material are they made from?

Can you write a shopping list! Imagine that you are going to the shops! What do you need to buy? Have a talk to your parents and think about what you might get from the shop! Also, it could be any shop e.g. a toy shop.

 

Easy - write your list as words e.g. doll, tin, hat etc.

 

Medium - write your list as a simple sentence e.g. I need a...

 

Hard - write your list as a sentence e.g. I need to get some...

Maths Challenge!

This week I thought it would be fun for you to have a go at ordering objects/ people by height, length or size! You can use anything you want that you can find either in your home or from outdoors. Below are some examples.

1. Order people in your house by height

2. Order sticks from your garden/ that you find on your daily walk by length

3. Order toys by height, length or size

Here is some mathematical language that you should be using whilst carrying out this activity!

Longest, shortest, tallest, highest, lowest, biggest, smallest, middle sized. 

Science Challenge!

Comparing similarities and differences is the topic for you to think about this week.

Choose 2 of your favourite animals.

Look at pictures of them either in books you may have, on the internet or the television. 

Can you draw a picture of the two animals you have chosen? 

Look and identify the differences between the animals you have chosen. Remember to think about their size, their features, their colour, how they move around, what noise they make, where they live and what they eat.

Spring is here! Can you do a little research with your parents and find out some things about spring! What changes happen in spring and what might we see? Have a go at writing down some of the facts that you have found and draw a picture to go with it!

 

Easy - write a few words about what you have found out. - e.g. babies, growing, new.

 

Medium - write a simple sentence about what you have found out. - e.g. Babies are born.

 

Hard - write a sentence about what you have found out. - e.g. The flowers start to grow in spring time.

Can you play Buried Treasure at home? (The link is below- phonics play). Can you find out which words are real and which words are silly and put them in the trash or the treasure?

 

Easy - phase 2 - all sounds.

 

Medium - phase 3 - up to ch.

Firstly, can you order the above numbers.

Then can you use the above numbers to make simple addition sums.

 

If you find this easy peasy ask an adult in your house to give you some 2 digit numbers between 10-20 to practice your addition sums with. 

 

Science Challenge!

Have fun with bubbles!

What you need:

Empty bottle

Old sock

Elastic band

Water

Washing up liquid

Simply cut the bottom off the bottle, slip the sock over to cover the bottom and add the elastic band to hold it in place and then dip the sock into a dish of bubble solution and blow! Make your bubble solution using simply water and washing up liquid!

 

Questions to think about...

What directions do your bubbles travel in?

How can you make them change direction?

Can you blow different sized bubbles?

Do bigger bubbles fall faster/ last longer than smaller bubbles or the other way around?

Writing Challenge!

What have you been up to during the Easter Holidays? We would love to hear what you have been doing over the Easter Holidays and what the Easter Bunny may have bought you, or what you have been up to with your family at home! Can you write about what you have been doing and draw a picture! Send us your writing so that we can see either by email or on the Facebook page!

 

Easy - write a few words about what you have been doing. - e.g. egg, chocolate, easter, outside

 

Medium - write a simple sentence about what you have been doing. - e.g. I got an egg.

 

Hard - write a sentence sentence about what you have been doing. - e.g. The easter bunny came and he bought me some eggs.

 

 

Phonics Challenge!

Can you practice spelling some words, parents choose some of the following words and either get your child to use their phonics flashcards from the learning packs or to have a go at writing some of the words.

 

Easy - cat, mat, rat, sat, pat, fat.  Tricky words - I, to.

 

Medium - sock, back, bat, him, jam, zip, van, yam. Tricky words - I, no, go, to, into, the.

Spend 10 minuites looking out of a window or door in your house. Observe and count how many different birds you can see. Talk to an adult in your house about the size, colour and types of birds that you see. Listen carefully to see if you can hear the sounds that different birds make. Can you draw a picture of a bird that you have seen?

Maths Challenge.

This week we would like you to explore capacity at home. Can you use different jugs, bowls, buckets and cups to explore filling and emptying different materials. Some examples of materials you could use are water, sand, flour, stones and dirt. You can carry out this activity indoors or outdoors. Explore filling the containers so that they are full, half full and empty! Have fun!

Feelings activity.

Have a good look at the different facial expressions in the picture below. Can you tell an adult in your house how each child feels in the pictures? Can you copy the different facial expressions that the children are making? Think of something that makes you feel these different emotions and talk about them with your adult.

Choose a character from your favourite story to write about e.g the gruffalo, stickman, zog, goldilocks - such as what they look like, how they might feel or what their personality is like e.g. nice, kind, etc. (Don't forget to draw a picture as well.

 

Easy - write some simple words about your favourite charcater.

 

Medium - write a simple sentence about your favourtie character.

 

Hard - write a sentence with the conjunction 'and' about your favourite charcter.

 

 

Phonics Challenge!

Use your flashcards from your learning packs to make some words with your children, encourage them to segment and blend the words to help spell them.

 

Easy - make words from the following - s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c,k,e,u,r,h.

Science Challenge

Can you make salt dough at home using 3 simple ingredients? Flour, salt and water!

You can make salt dough animals, flowers, buildings or hand and foot prints.

Ingredients

1 cup salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup warm water

 

Directions

1. In a large bowl mix salt and flour.

2. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.

3. With your hands form a ball with your dough and kneed it for at least 5 minutes. The longer you kneed your dough the smoother it will be.

4. You can let your salt dough creations air dry, however salt dough can also be dried in the oven. Bake at 200 F until your creation is dry. The amount of time needed to bake your creations depends on size and thickness; thin flat ornaments may only take 45-60 minutes, thicker creations can take 2-3 hours or more.

 

Once your salt dough is hard you can decorate it!

Maths Challenge

Ask an adult to hide your number cards out of your home learning pack around your house. Can you find them and identify the correct number?

Can you write down the numbers 1-5/1-10/1-20, cut them out and order them correctly?

PE Challenge! - Locomotion (Different Movements) W.B 23.3.20

 

1) Run from one side to the other end of a room

2) Bring in different movements such as hopping, skipping, jumping, running and crawling

3) This time pick up an object and place it on the floor at the other end of the room

 

CHALLENGE - Take as many objects as possible in 30 seconds to the other end of the room whilst moving in different ways.

 

Then count how many objects you have sent over
